Army Brat.

Growing up in a military family taught Kate Kane a great many things. The first was the ability to adapt to any situation. She moved so often when she was a child that she learned how to readjust herself to fit new surroundings. It was a hard process, but Beth taught her that as long as they had each other they would be fine. Even with Beth gone the memory of her is what helped Kate learn to adjust to anything that comes her way, outside her own trauma, so that she can fit the world around her. Moving and new situations don’t scare her as much anymore.

Other things came naturally to her as she grew up to model her father. ‘Soldier on’ was a phrase repeated often in her household, one Kate takes seriously. She uses it to give her strength and push through the hard times. Honor, truth, morals, so on and so forth. Kate learned all these from her Lieutenant Colonel father. She used them to base the foundation of her life, and joined the military with these in mind.

Out and Proud.

One thing Kate is very sure of is her sexual orientation. It’s something she’s struggled with in the past, but learned to come to terms with. She’s endured a troubled past for her sexual orientation, the major problem arising from her service in the military. Under Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell Kate was questioned about her orientation, and told she was the only one being questioned. She did not falter in the face of a ruined career, though. She lived up to West Point’s moral code of not lying, and was honest about what had occurred. She was ‘separated from the army’.

Kate’s never tried to hide who she is, nor will she ever. She believes in the honor and moral code her father taught her and wants nothing more than to serve her country and be who she is all at once. Sadly, it was something she could never do with the current military standings.

The Socialite.

Kate is ever the social butterfly. It’s ranged from self-damaging times in which she slept with as many people she could, stayed out late, and never stopped partying to being a more casual social butterfly that’s able to manage herself while still clubbing.

Truth is, Kate loves to be social. She loves the night life and being a part of it. She loves to go out to bars and dance to music and get silly drunk. Kate has been bad about it in the past, but she’s cleaned up a lot since. Now she’s still aware of her surroundings and never lets herself go too far beyond her limits.

When out and about Kate can be the most charming girl you’ll ever meet. She is goofy and witty at times, and knows all the right things to say. She likes to be light when she’s out, so she’ll be playful and cheerful when around others. It’s her way of immersing herself and forgetting the world, and here there are no troubles. Only happiness. So she likes to be sweet to people and make them smile and laugh.

Traumas Abound.

Like all DC Universe people, Kate carries traumas with her that affects her daily life. The loss of her mother and twin sister in a kidnapping when she was younger is the largest of these traumas. Her sister was her everything and losing her has left a whole in her heart that Kate has never been able to fill. She has tried with military and then dangerous life choices after when she lost that. Each thing is just a way to fill the pain inside of her.

Another trauma occurs when she is Batwoman. Being stabbed in the heart leaves it’s mark on a person in several different ways.

Both of these situations have made Kate into a woman who refuses to be a victim any longer. She will never again be helpless at the hands of another. Never again watch people she loves dies. Never again be hurt by people.

Batwoman.

The Batwoman was a way for Kate to fill so many holes left in her life. Holes that Beth left and that the military and drunken behavior has not been able to fulfill.

Kate has always desired to serve her country. Obviously, she lost that. Then she found a new way to serve. She realized the bat signal was more than a way to scare criminals and warn the public. It was a call to arms. It was calling the people who protected Gotham to stand and fight.

Kate donned the Batwoman outfit and vowed to serve her city, and the world at times. The bat became a symbol to her the way it did the rest of the world, and she vowed to honor it.

Human.

As a human, Kate Kane has nothing special about her. She’s normal and squishy. Well, squishy-ish. Before becoming Batwoman Kate was enrolled at West Point, a military college. As such, she has severe military training and nearly graduated top of her class.

Batwoman.

Becoming Batwoman led Kate to train in a lot of other techniques, from street-fighting to formal martial arts. She’s now classified as an ‘olympic level athlete’ and knows gymnastics as well as free-running techniques (to put it simply). She’s had training from an ex-S.A.S. (special air service) agent, urban and non-lethal specialists, men who have worked in intel (and taught her detective skills), so on and so forth. She’s also undergone severe forms of training to learn how to handle extreme circumstances (ie. locked in a prison cell with a hose turned on her, hand-cuffed, and with men attacking her). Since then she goes out every night to fight crime and works out every day to keep her skills in top condition.

[ A coffin was one thing but now… ]

A morgue? Really? [ She laughs like this is all some joke. She doesn’t know who her kidnappers are and who has access to the network. She has to act like Kate, not like Batwoman. ]

That’s a bit of an extreme joke. Don’t get me wrong, I love a good joke every now and again? Did you hear the joke only smart people are told? [ Badum-tish ]

This is just a little bit beyond my normal taste, though. First person to tell me how to get back to Gotham gets a to-be-determined prize.

[ A pause and a charming grin from the lady. ]

No guarantees on the prize, sorry.

third person sample:
Gotham was home where Kate had none. Her father was to blame for that.

Her father was to blame for many things.

The point of the matter was that she had grown up in many houses, but Gotham was home. Gotham was where she lived now, and where she would live until she died. She was sure of it.

It had really been pure chance that had made Gotham into her home. Her father had married a woman with too much money, but money all the same. That money was primarily wrapped up in things in Gotham. The rumor was Wayne owned half the city, the Kane family owned the other half. Well if that was true, it was only necessary that the Kane family offer its own savior up when Batman had left the mantle behind.

There was something exhilarating about swinging along on a rope and flipping high above busy streets that Kate would never grow tired of. Being the Batwoman had opened up a world to her that she’d never known existed. Not known in this way at least. Everyone knew of the Batman and the others, but no one knew it intimately. Not like she now did. This world was breath-taking.

She stood atop a building, perched at the edge as wind whipped her hair about her face.

“--krrrk-- downtown heading east --krk-- hostage-“

That was all she needed.

She spread her cape behind her and took off into the night. Answering the unspoken call for the bats.
